Tunnel road tender allows 5-storey commercial complex in Lalbagh: Tejasvi Surya

Surya reiterated that the tunnel road project is "patently illegal" for lacking an environmental impact assessment.

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya alleged that the State government had submitted an affidavit in the Karnataka High Court seeking to acquire five acres of Lalbagh for the Congress’ tunnel road project.

Surya alleged that the tender that the State government has floated “permits the contractor to build a five-storey commercial complex on the five acres that they want to acquire”.

The BJP leader, along with his supporters, distributed pamphlets with the tagline “Lalbagh is for sale” to morning walkers and visitors, appealing to citizens to "save Lalbagh" from what he termed an assault on the City's “green lungs”.

Surya claimed that the intention to commercialise the heritage site is “written in black and white” in the tender and Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by the government.

“We want development, but we want the right kind of development. Please do not spoil whatever little green heritage is left of Bengaluru for real estate project,” he told reporters. ''The Lalbagh lake is an important piece of ecology and heritage. Five acres is not a small joke.”

He added that the legal case against the tunnel road was ongoing, and that the High Court had made the process subject to Private Interest Litigations (PILs) that have been filed before it, including one that he is party to. The next hearing for final disposal is scheduled for 20 August.

Surya has described the tunnel road as "patently illegal" due to a lack of environmental impact assessments (EIA).

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has been pushing for a 16.7km Hebbal-to-Silk Board twin tunnel road, arguing that it would help decongest Bengaluru.
